Charity Dinner – Online Safety Advice

We were enthralled by the passion of the contributors who had a few words to give to our guests. The topics ranged from:

  • How to select the right school for your child
  • How community charities can work with local authorities
  • How parents can assist their children with their learning

Our website was launched by Ophelia from OVLTD who not only introduced our guests to the  new website, features and content but also shared a few online safety top tips in keeping with some of the advice given on the above topics.

We all know that today, young people’s online activity has skyrocketed, pushing activities such as watching or playing Scabble to the background. It is therefore, important that parents, community leaders, organisations such as charities arm themselves with some useful ‘top tips’ for young people to keep themselves safe online when at home. Sadly there has been a significant increase in cyberbullying, and other related cyber crime

Online Safety @ Home Top Tips

  1. Put yourself in control: Install parental controls on iPads, laptops or mobile phones. You can usually find this on your provider’s website. If you are unsure a phone call to your provider will give you the information.
  2. Have your computer or device in a communal area. Set times for use with very young children
  3. Keep control of your passwords. Make passwords strong by using a short phrase with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
  4. Take an interest in your child’s online life.
  5. Don’t be afraid to look over your youngster’s shoulder when they are online- ask questions about what they are doing online. Ask them to ‘show you’, if you are unsure. Find out about their online activities at school. Be a part of their online life!
  6. Emphasis the need to keep personal information private (name, address, telephone number etc).
  7. Emphasis NEVER meet online only friends offline unless they have a trusted adult or parent with them.
  8. Block or allow certain games to be played online. Be also aware about internet access through Xbox, Nintendo Wii and other gaming devices.
